I know a lot of you like watches, so I was hoping you might be able to give me some advice. I just graduated from high school, and figured I would treat myself (also because I don’t have a nice dressy watch anymore). Anyways, here are some criteria I have concerning your suggestions. For the record, I was thinking about the Tag Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph 42mm.

Kinja'd!!!

It can’t cost more than $2,000. That’s just too much money to spend on a watch.

It shouldn’t be bulky. In other words, not this:

Kinja'd!!!

The band material can’t be rubber. I’m sure it is easier to maintain, but I don’t think it looks right on a nice watch.

It should obviously look sleek/sexy. I like clean designs. The Tag Heuer I show above is close to my maximum limit.

I think that’s it. Any suggestions from you people?

Kinja'd!!!

Yesterday I saw a Polaris Slingshot. Interesting little thing.

Nixon watches. I own 13 of them.

The Sinn 856 is probably the best made watch you can buy under $2k USD

I am looking for a Squale Atmos20, which is basically just a knock-off Rolex dive watch. But I suppose for around $2000, you could probably get the real thing (used at least).

At that price point you have some good used options. Girard Perregaux chronos seem to be going for $1k for manual, and $2k+ for automatics on eBay. They are quite beautiful.

Tudor makes some very nice watches within budget.

I’m a little sour on Tag right now. Just had to have mine repaired and apparently they pulled all their licenses and won’t sell parts anymore so you have to ship it to Tag in New York for any repairs. At which point, bend over. But this is the industry trend. My next high end one will be an Omega or Rolex, brands that my guy is licensed to fix. So I guess my advice is, like cars, it's good to have a trusted local mechanic identified.

You’re in the ideal price range - so many options.

Personally, I would buy an Autodromo Stradale for $875 (and then buy me an extra one with the leftover money hehehe)!

Or, if you (or someone you know) has a Coscto membership, go down and look at their selection. Not too many watches, but I’ve seen some great ones from Citizen, Seiko, etc. in your budget.

If you want watches with an automotive theme, take a look at Redline . This is one of my favorites:

Go vintage, a mechancial self-winding watch. Avoid chronometers, unless you’re a yatchsman or a pilot. Something classy and timeless, like this, say:

I've always had a soft spot in my heart for Mondaine watches, the Swiss Railway clock design is the definition of timeless.

I’m a big watch guy. Like you, I wanted to treat myself to a nice watch. These are heirloom watches - I can keep it forever and give it to a kid of mine, sell it in a few years with not a whole of depreciated, or do anything. Luckily, nicer brands rarely change styles, so your watch will remain timeless (pun intended).

Kinja'd!!!

I have a Tag similar to that one, but with a stainless steel band. I got in July of 2013, and in September 2013 is stopped working. The thing needed a full overhaul and it took three months to fix at Tag. Luckily, it was still in warranty so it cost me nothing. However, I don’t trust it anymore. For the price, I expect better reliability than a Timex. I should have asked for a replacement given the age and what happened.

However, when I graduated college this past year, I treated myself to a newer, better watch with the help of some graduation money. The new guy is self-winding, which is sort of a pain in the ass, but it’s so much higher quality.

My Advice: buy a pre-owned Omega. I think Tag is a lower tier high-end watch brand.

Kinja'd!!!

Remember: Like cars, you can haggle on watch prices. My tag was like $1,900 and I got it for $1,400 and I got my Omega for $700 off list.

+1. Same situation with my Tag. it took them 3 months to fix it (the watch, itself was 3-months old).

I got an Omega.

I think their Stradale is beautifully designed, personally.

No idea about the quality though, and, admittedly, it’s a little snobbish to wear an “Instrument for Motoring” while driving a Miata home from work on the freeway.

I like my Tokyobay Mason. That said, my budget for watches isn’t that big. I have 8, and I know I haven’t spent even half your max. Personally, I don’t think id ever spend more than $300 on a watch unless my finances change significantly for the better.

I am looking for a watch, have a little bit smaller price range that you do, and have finally narrowed it down to a Hamilton watch.

Also wanted to add it Tag charged $11xx to fix the two buttons on the side and they wanted another $350 to refinish, which used to be included. Refinish should be $100-150 maybe. Now I want something else for my daily.
